Djuwadi | ‘Perjalanan sebuah kisah: Life as it happens’

Perjalanan sebuah kisah is an exhibition of 39 woodcut prints and blocks by Indonesian artist Djuwadi, reflecting his twenty-year artistic journey and evolving dialogue between past and present. His practice spans woodcut printing and carving, street murals, visual and performance art, and collaborative public projects, shaped by his experiences living and travelling across Indonesia, Timor-Leste, Papua New Guinea, Japan, India, Australia, and Southeast Asia. Deeply rooted in community engagement and social justice, Djuwadi’s work explores ecological stewardship, indigenous and rural communities, democracy, political participation, and personal and collective memory. Rather than working primarily in a studio, Djuwadi creates through collaborative workshops and public activities, using art to foster empathy, relationships, and social exchange. Through his work as an independent artist and as a member of the Yogyakarta-based art collective Taring Padi, Djuwadi’s practice reflects the contemporary Indonesian art tradition of responding to political and social change through collective action and artmaking. Continuing this socially-engaged approach, the exhibition offers a gathering space for dialogue, co-learning, workshops, and storytelling with the artist.
Presented by Blueprint Art Space in partnership with Nikoi Island and Ubah Rumah Art Residency, Perjalanan sebuah kisah is curated by Ernest Goh and Alecia Neo, co-artistic directors of the Ubah Rumah Art Residency on Nikoi Island.

About the Artist
Djuwadi (b. 1974, Indonesia) is a self-taught artist from the Blora Regency in Central Java, Indonesia. He is known for his woodcut prints and his highly-skilled work in Javanese wood carving. His commitment to community-based arts has diversified his forms of expression across visual and performance arts, and street art. He often takes on the role of a teaching artist in communities, focusing on environmental and social political issues.
Djuwadi began an informal apprenticeship in traditional Javanese woodcarving at age 15, learning from several master practitioners living in Randublatung. In 2005, he became a member of the renowned Yogyakarta-based art activist collective, Taring Padi, where his art reflected strong political and social activism. In both his personal work and his collaborative work with Taring Padi, Djuwadi seeks to raise awareness for human rights through the culture of sharing and exchange. Over the years, he has accumulated a rich and diverse experience, living and working collaboratively with communities and artists engaging in themes of nature and ecology.
As an independent artist and as a member of Taring Padi, Djuwadi has participated in numerous exhibitions and festivals, and conducted workshops in Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, East Timor, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, Taiwan, England, USA, Germany, and Italy.
He is currently based in Dili, Timor-Leste.
